Perhaps we could teach and write and discuss worship until we had it unraveled. Maybe we could examine it under the bright light of human analysis until the last shadow disappeared. But why? What is the point in trying to write lyrics to a song that is more beautiful left unsung? Saint Peter talked about “joy unspeakable” (1 Pet. 1:8 KJV). Let’s leave it that way.

Even the world of professional psychology has begun to understand this, especially University of Pennsylvania psychologist Martin Seligman, former president of the American Psychological Association. According to a TIME magazine cover story entitled “The New Science of Happiness” (TIME, January 17, 2005), “extensive testing in controlled trials has convinced Dr. Seligman that ‘the single most effective way to turbocharge your joy…is to make a ‘gratitude visit.’ That means writing a testimonial thanking a teacher, pastor or grandparent—anyone to whom you owe a debt of gratitude—and then visiting that person to read him or her the letter of appreciation. ‘The remarkable thing,’ says Seligman, ‘is that people who do this just once are measurably happier and less depressed a month later. But it’s gone by three months.’ Less powerful but more lasting, he says, is an exercise he calls three blessings—taking time each day to write down a trio of things that went well and why.‘People are less depressed and happier three months later and six months later.’”
